Awarded the prestigious Entrepreneurial University of the Year by the Times Higher Education Award, London South Bank University is one of the most reputed higher education institutions globally. Established as the Borough Polytechnic Institute in south London in 1892, South Bank University received the university status in 1992. In 2003, the university was christened to its current name as London South Bank University.

The seven schools at LSBU include School of Applied Sciences, School of Arts and Creative Industries, School of the Built Environment and Architecture, School of Business, School of Engineering, School of Health and Social Care, School of Law and Social Sciences.

Entry Requirements

Undergraduate Entry Requirements:

Each course has specific entry requirements, which are listed on each course in the tab 'Entry requirements'.

You must have five GCSE passes at grade C or above – including English and Maths – to study any of our courses. We’ll also accept Functional Skills Level 2 Maths and English in place of GCSEs. If you completed your English and Maths GCSE under the new grading system, you’ll need a grade 4 or higher.

It’s important that you have a good understanding of Maths, Communication and IT, along with knowledge and interest in the subject area you're applying to.

Postgraduate Entry Requirements:

You need either a first degree (usually at least a 2:2) or a minimum of three years' post-qualification experience in a relevant field to take a postgraduate degree at LSBU.

It's essential postgraduate candidates have high standards in maths or numeracy, communication and IT and can demonstrate a good knowledge and interest in the subject area they're applying for.

Research Degrees:

To register for a PhD you'll normally need a first or second class Honours degree from a recognised university. Our typical applicant will have a relevant Masters with Merit or Distinction.

Holders of other qualifications will be considered on merit and we take into account the nature and scope of the proposed programme. We also recognise professional experience, publications, reports and other evidence of accomplishment as well as an ability and background knowledge appropriate to the proposed research.

Candidates need a good standard of English language skills to complete their work and prepare and defend a thesis. As a research student your application needs to be accepted by one of our seven Schools and this is only done once an appropriate supervisory team has been identified.

Taught Courses:

Normal entry qualifications for Postgraduate Diploma and Masters courses is an Honours degree or equivalent. For some Postgraduate Diplomas alternative qualifications are accepted along with relevant work experience. The University considers each application on its merits and is prepared to admit candidates who demonstrate they have reached our standard entry requirements on the basis of prior experiential learning.

English Language Requirements:

  • GCSE/GCE O Level English Language (Edexcel and Cambridge Overseas exam boards): Grade 4 or above
  • IGCSE English as a Second Language / First Language English (Cambridge Assessment): Grade C or above
  • International Baccalaureate diploma English A: HL 4 SL 5
  • International Baccalaureate diploma English B: HL 5
  • TOEFL: Computerised: 213, Internet based (iBT): 80 Note: the minimum scores required in each skill area are: Reading 18, Listening 17, Writing 17, Speaking 20/ Computerised: 237 Internet based (iBT): 90 Note: the minimum scores required in each skill area are: Reading 18, Listening 17, Writing 17, Speaking 20.
  • TOEFL Home Edition
  • PASSWORD: 6.0 overall (not less than 5.5 in each section) / 6.5 overall (not less than 5.5 in each section)
  • PTE (Pearsons Test of English): 52 points / 60 points

Scholarship

International Scholarships:

This year LSBU is offering scholarships and discounts to hundreds of students via our International Scholarships.

LSBU values the academic and cultural diversity that international students bring to the University, and we are now awarding partial scholarships of £1,500 to self-funded overseas fee-paying students undertaking undergraduate, postgraduate or PhD studies.

International Merit Scholarships:

The International Merit Scholarships offer students pursuing undergraduate or postgraduate taught programmes with outstanding academic profiles a fee reduction of up to £3,000 on each full academic year's tuition fees for those who meet the criteria. £1,500 International Scholarship. Additional Information, the International Merit Scholarship is only available to new applicants for an LSBU undergraduate or postgraduate taught degree programme having met the above criteria. Current students will not be eligible. New students who do not meet the academic criteria for this scholarship will be eligible for a scholarship up to £1,500

LSBU Loyalty Award:

As part of our commitment to supporting our students' future career success we offer postgraduate Tuition Fee discounts for LSBU graduates progressing directly onto a postgraduate course and eligible alumni.

ONCAMPUS London South Bank Merit Scholarship

LSBU is offering scholarships in the form of a 25% fee reduction to ONCAMPUS London South Bank students progressing to university degree programmes. For those who meet the criteria there will be a 25% discount for each full academic year of study. ONCAMPUS London South Bank students who do not meet the criteria will be eligible for the International Scholarships on progression to an LSBU degree programme.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship offers thousands of scholarships for students who are eligible for Federal Pell Grants at their home institution. The deadline for Spring students is in early October. The deadline for Summer and Fall students is in March.

BUTEX International Scholarship

As a BUTEX affiliated university we are able to offer you the opportunity to apply for the £500 BUTEX International Scholarship. The Scholarship is open to all International (non-EU) Study Abroad students who are not funded by an ERASMUS grant. To be eligible to apply you must have been offered a study abroad place here. The deadline for applying for this scholarship is mid-June every year.

Chevening Scholarships

The UK Government's global scholarship programme is funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations. The Scholarships offer nationals from a variety of countries highly coveted opportunities to study for a Master's degree at a UK university. They can develop their skills, create new networks, strengthen their opportunities and expand their horizons. Application information is on the Chevening website.

Foundation for Global Scholars

The Foundation for Global Scholars attempt to inspires and equip young adults to tackle global challenges through international experience, leadership skills, and cultural competence. They offer various scholarships.

Fund for Education Abroad

The Fund for Education abroad are committed to increasing the opportunities for dedicated American students to participate in high-quality education abroad programmes. They offer many scholarships for various amounts.

Go Overseas

Each semester, Go Overseas offers scholarships to Study Abroad students based on the creativity and analytical thinking demonstrated through writing samples and/or video submissions.

Tortuga Backpacks

Tortuga Backpacks believe that students deserve to experience the world beyond their college campuses, but appreciate that not everyone can afford to travel. Funds may be used for tuition, accommodation, books, or travel. Deadlines are in May and December.

University Language

Take a photo that captures what you learned (or want to learn) from studying abroad, write a short description of 100-200 words, and you could win a $500 college scholarship. There are various deadlines throughout the year.
