MRes in Artificial Intelligence in Business

The Master of Research in Artificial Intelligence in Business is a forward-looking, research-intensive and flagship programme designed to equip you with the methodological and analytical skills required to thrive in organisations leveraging artificial intelligence. The programme offers a comprehensive foundation in research design and execution, with a particular emphasis on applying AI technologies to tackle complex organisational challenges.

You will develop a distinctive blend of research capability and domain expertise in AI, enabling you to critically investigate how machine learning, data science, and automation are transforming organisational processes and decision-making. In addition to advanced research skills, you will refine key transferable competencies valued by employers globally — including effective communication, quantitative/qualitative analysis, cross-cultural collaboration, reflective practice, and the ability to critically evaluate technological developments through a business lens.

Entry Requirements

An honours degree (at least 2:2 or equivalent) in business, management, or any other discipline that is related to artificial intelligence or digital management.

All students from non-majority English speaking countries require proof of English language proficiency. The following qualifications and grades will be considered:

  • Grade 4/C in English Language and Mathematics
  • IELTS 6.5 (with no less than 5.5 in any band)

Other English language tests are accepted by the University.

You'll also have the opportunity to work closely with the Herts Careers and Employment team to help you find a suitable role, support with your application and prepare you for any interviews.

This two-year full-time programme is a great opportunity if you want to pursue postgraduate study in the UK to prepare for a future in a research/consultancy role by providing opportunities for you to:

  • study a range of research methods that are applicable to business research and develop your understanding of the vital role artificial intelligence will play in business;
  • acquire a unique combination of skills that are transferrable to a professional workplace and sought after by employers worldwide which include the use of software and systems commonly used in business to support research into artificial intelligence opportunities for business;
  • obtain a world-recognised master's degree and move on to further studies or employment.

Course Details

Your modules will be led by experts in research methods and design, and artificial intelligence for business. The first year includes a combination of modules to enhance your knowledge and skills in various areas including Research in Action: Methodologies, Data Collection and Analytical Strategies, Essentials of Artificial Intelligence in Business and Digital Management and Artificial Intelligence in Practice: Innovation, Impact, and Contemporary Challenges.

You will also start work on your research and studying these modules will help you to shape your proposal which will inform your major research project to be undertaken in year 2. This independent major research project will be supported by a team of supervisors and will develop your skills of researching artificial intelligence opportunities, challenges and solutions for business.

You will be taught through a varied programme of teaching and learning that includes small group discussions, practical workshops in computer labs, web-based learning, case study analysis and lectures. Sessions will be delivered by subject specialists as well as practitioners and consultants to provide a diverse perspective on the topics covered.

You will be assessed individually or in teams through a variety of assessment methods including written reports of various lengths, presentations, in-class tests and practical assignments. You will also be required to complete a longer research thesis for the research component of your programme.
