This course allows you to top up your existing qualifications to an honour’s degree in two years full-time or three years sandwich, whilst benefiting from all that Northumbria University and the city of Newcastle has to offer.This course has been designed to give you the ideal balance between a broad understanding of business, whilst developing your specialist knowledge in accounting and finance as well as transferable professional and managerial techniques.

The course includes specialist modules that cover personal finance and wealth planning, decision making in the financial environment, strategic management accounting, and financial reporting. Ranked 46th in the UK for Accounting and Finance (Complete University Guide 2022), this course provides an excellent foundation for jobs in finance, banking, government, and general business leadership. One in six of the UK’s top 100 chief executives started out with a finance or accounting degree.

English Language Requirements:

International applicants should have a minimum overall IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0 with 5.5 in each component (or an approved equivalent*).

Career Prospects

At the end of this course there are logical career paths into accounting and finance roles with leading accounting practices. Equally you can move into a range of careers in business and management, both in the UK and around the world. You can also undertake further study at postgraduate level with a course such as our International Finance and Investment MSc. If you decide to start up your own business, it’s good to know that the combined turnover of our graduates’ start-up companies is higher than that of any other UK university.

Whatever you decide to do, you will have strong employability as a result of having acquired the characteristics of a Northumbria graduate. These include critical reflection and self-learning, collaboration and curiosity, and the ability to apply your knowledge to solve problems in ways that are sustainable and ethical.

Course Details

You will embark on a number of different modules in your first year including core modules to support your learning journey, and specialist modules within accounting and finance. You will also have the option of undertaking an additional year in either placement, study abroad or a hybrid of the two. You will receive guidance on both opportunities led by your Programme Leader, supported by the Director of Employability and the Faculty Lead for Study Abroad. The university provides significant guidance through our placement office and international partnerships team who enjoy successful relationships with a wide range of employers and global universities.

In your final year, you will be challenged through modules that allow you to take strategic consideration of business and management within an accounting and finance context, as well as a substantial research-based activity that is linked to a specific research problem within accounting and finance.

If you do not undertake the study abroad or placement option, you will be able to choose between either a management enquiry or a consultancy project with an external client as your final year research-based activity to ensure you graduate with ‘real-world’ business experience. For those that have undertaken a study abroad or placement, you will also have the option of choosing a dissertation. Whichever you choose, your programme leader will support you in selecting the right option for you and will work with the teaching teams to identify the different modules which best match your career aspirations.
