This degree, which is accredited by the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC), with its strong emphasis on real-world experience, is an excellent choice for those looking to gain the expert knowledge and practical skills required to enter the mental health care profession. One in every four people will experience mental health problems at some point in their lives. It is a rapidly growing area of nursing that requires caring, compassionate, and knowledgeable professionals.
This course will teach you how to provide high-quality nursing care, as well as how to enable, educate, and encourage those suffering from mental health issues to progress toward recovery.
Practical experience is essential in the course, with 50% of your time spent on placement in a variety of healthcare settings throughout the south.

For UK students who do not meet the entry requirements for the degree course, we offer a Foundation Year option. This extra year of study will provide a solid foundation in the scientific skills required to prepare you for the Mental Health Nursing degree, while also increasing your confidence, knowledge, and skills for further study. After completing the Foundation Year, you will progress to the full degree and begin your studies in Mental Health Nursing. The Foundation Year will take place at Bournemouth's Talbot Campus.

Accreditation

Accredited by the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC), this course will prepare you to be eligible to register and practice as a registered mental health nurse. Please note that the Foundation Year part of the course is not accredited.

Entry Requirements

  • 112 - 128 UCAS tariff points including a minimum of 2 A-levels or equivalent. BTEC Extended Diploma of DMM.  Foundation Year: 48-72 UCAS tariff points.

  • GCSE English Language or English Literature and Mathematics grade 4 (or grade C in the old grading system). We also accept iGCSEs, Key Skills, functional Skills, and other qualifications at Level 2 of the National Qualifications Framework.

  • 102–118 UCAS tariff points with any combination of Distinction, Merit, And Pass grades.

  • IELTS (Academ

    ic) 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each component, or equivalent.

  • Mental health nurse in an in-patient environment (e.g. acute admissions unit, elderly care, treatment wards, psychiatric intensive care unit, or rehabilitation)

  • Community mental health nurse

  • Staff nurse

  • Specialist nurse (covering the likes of eating disorders, addictions, forensic psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, or psychological therapist).

Course Details

This course prepares you to work in a variety of mental health settings with a diverse range of people. You will gain experience in inter-professional practice and develop skills in mental health nursing across the lifespan. The Bsc (Hons) Mental Health Nursing course is part of the Nursing Framework offered by the Faculty of Health & Social Sciences, which also includes BSc (Hons) Adult Nursing and BSc (Hons) Children & Young People's Nursing courses with advanced standing. We have developed this course as part of a co-ordinated suite of nursing courses to enhance student learning and prepare you for practice. Our approach to interprofessional education entails students participating in shared workshops, lectures, and learning events with other students taking health-related courses throughout the course.
